I received a text one day from a friend who bought an Opus X Maduro Double Robusto. They were informed by another friend that such a beast had never been released. Apparently some Opus bands had been stolen and it was believed that these fakes might be Fuente Anejos with the stolen bands on them. After some reading and Googling it seems as though there have been a few of these floating around. I then remembered that I had one stuffed away. So, I figured I fire it up and see what was up with them.

Pre-light
The wrapper smells quite musty with extremely faintly diluted spice. The foot has a little bit more pronounced spice, earth, and a very faint cocoa. Lightly natural box press. Some large veins and several medium veins. It feels hard to the touch.

Flavor
Initial flavor tastes... like tobacco. A bitter hay flavor quickly takes charge. At this point I know without a doubt that this is not an Opus X, rebanded Anejo, or even a Fuente product. I'd peg it for Honduran tobacco and not even the good stuff. Even a "dud" has some common flavor characteristics.

Hoping to be proven wrong later into the cigar I trudge on. about halfway in and yea... still the same. Bland. Blah. No spice. No flavor. Well, there is a hay flavor and some soapy bitterness. Usually when I have a drink it is to compliment the cigar but I'm taking sips to wash away the flavor.

Conclusion
Had I not been reviewing this stick I would have tossed it after the first third. Also, the friend who had one smoked his at the same time and came to a similar conclusion. If you see an Opus X Maduro Double Robusto for sale then run away and run fast.

First off excellent review. Second excellent update.
My two cents on this, I believe with many of the higher end NC cigars, we are going to be seeing this trend of forgeries. I have heard from some of my sources this is a real concern and trend that has been seen on the east coast and is trending ...

Three sources I trust are Holts( majority owned by Fuente), CFCF charity boxes, and the Fuente family for the ultra HTF Opus and Fuente products. Otherwise buy at your own risk. just my .03 cents

OVTC is another one I've used for the last 10 years and always reputable when it comes to Opus and pricing.

pay attention to trades that include Opus Maduro and OLH should be cautioned as well if an ISO is made. ASK where they were purchased, as I feel there are going to be a number of people who are looking to recover there money one way or another.... Beware

We have all seen the FauxPusEx's around and lucky for those who know their Vendors you can tell a real one from a fake within 2 draws. I even see reputable Vendors who try to sell their cigars that rival the Opus...I've tried them all and none compare. I even tried the Turei Cigars...Hispaniola th...

Yea, I've tried that Turei and it can't come close to touching an Opus. I put a review on it here somewhere.
